Packing for Your Safari

Packing for safari is refreshingly simple. Life in camp is relaxed and informal, and most days are spent outdoors on game drives, walks, and enjoying time around camp. Comfort and practicality should guide what you bring.
A Few Guiding Principles
Pack light
Most safaris include travel by small aircraft between camps, which have strict luggage weight limits and require soft-sided bags. The good news is that most camps offer laundry service, so you need fewer clothing items than you might think.
Choose the right colours
Neutral tones – khaki, olive, tan, and soft browns – work best in the bush. These colours help you blend into the surroundings on walks and maintain the relaxed ambiance of safari camps and vehicles.
Wear practical fabrics
Lightweight, breathable materials that dry quickly are ideal. You’ll spend most of your time outdoors, so comfortable, easy-to-wear clothing works best.
Think in layers
Game drives often begin at dawn when temperatures can be cool, and the movement of the vehicle can make it feel downright cold. As the day warms, layers can easily be removed.
Many experienced safari travellers adopt a simple “safari uniform” – a few comfortable shirts and trousers worn repeatedly during the trip. If you’re unsure what works well, look at what the guides wear and follow their lead.
A note on camouflage: In many African countries, camouflage clothing is reserved for the military and can be strictly enforced for civilians. An odd camo t-shirt worn on safari is fine, but please avoid wearing camouflage in airports, towns, or other public areas. Full camo combat gear should be left at home.
