Global Sojourns’ Giving Circle
The Global Sojourns Giving Circle (GSGC) is a non-profit organization created in 2007 by people who – while traveling, living and working in Africa – were touched by the continent’s natural beauty and the enduring spirit of its people.Unable to separate the poverty and struggles of many Africans from their own experiences, GSGC’s supporters have joined together to create a positive, lasting impact. Their commitment is to the education and empowerment of Africa’s most vulnerable and orphaned children, primarily girls.
GSGC first locates and forges direct, actively monitored partnerships with some of Africa’s dynamic social entrepreneurs and community based organizations, and then provides them with financial and capacity-building support. These partners know which girls’ families can’t afford schooling, or if an orphan’s world has been hard-hit by HIV/AIDS, poverty or serious abuse. Partners identify those girls with leadership abilities, then uplift them through education and mentorship.
Why focus on girls? Studies show that an educated and empowered girl is among the best and most sustainable of investments. With help, she will mature into a woman who can contribute to her family, create a healthier community and improve the future for all.
Drawing upon its deep understanding of local needs, African culture and international philanthropy, GSGC has earned professional success and community respect. It sends almost every dollar it receives to the field, where even a small gift can transform lives.
